Chicago-based composer John Timothy Saunders wrote Akashina at the request of the Azumino Flute Quartet, which performed the world premier of the piece in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, in 2007. Each of the three movements of Akashina musically depict a scene set in a different location in the picturesque Japanese town of Akashina.
